The Saints Wear White: A Tribute to COVID-19 Medical Workers

An Immersive Fresco Experience in Hubei Province

The Saints Wear White envisions the interior walls and ceilings of a church in China's Hubei province, where the COVID-19 pandemic began, transformed into a mural depicting doctors and nurses dressed in white protective gear. Taking inspiration from church painting and fresco, it is an homage that expresses gratitude to medical workers.

The Saints Wear White, designed by Duyi Han, is a unique project that combines art, architecture, and design to pay tribute to the heroes and saints of the COVID-19 crisis - the medical workers. This conceptual project transforms the interior walls and ceilings of a church in Hubei province, the epicenter of the pandemic, into a large mural depicting figures dressed in white decontamination suits.

What sets The Saints Wear White apart is its use of fresco painting, a historic style of church art, to create an immersive and emotionally powerful experience. The 3D renderings of the project serve as both an architectural proposal and visual art, capturing the attention of viewers around the world since its creation in February 2020.

With recent reports of mistreatment and improvable work conditions of medical professionals in China, The Saints Wear White aims to bring attention to their sacrifices and elevate their status. The project serves as a reminder of the dedication and selflessness of these individuals, who risk their lives to save others.

The design of The Saints Wear White is not limited to its visual impact. The layout of the space is reminiscent of a church or chapel, with a central open area where visitors can freely move around. This layout enhances the immersive perceptual experience, allowing visitors to engage with the artwork and reflect on the significance of the medical workers' contributions.

While The Saints Wear White currently exists as renderings, the intention is to physically realize the project using stucco, plaster, and painted fresco in an actual chapel or as an independent interior installation. The project's location in Wuhan, China, and its association with the origins of the pandemic add to its local relevance and global understanding.

The Saints Wear White has received recognition for its innovative design and meaningful concept. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges the project's outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life.

The Saints Wear White is not just a design; it is a powerful statement that honors the bravery and dedication of medical workers worldwide. Through its unique combination of art, architecture, and design, it invites viewers to reflect on the sacrifices made by these unsung heroes and unite in gratitude and support.
